The pencil strokes of Walter Thomason
capture the unique character of each of the five District Offices that
meld together to form the Twelfth Federal Reserve District. The series
of murals, commissioned by the FRBSF in 1978, hang in a non-public area
of the headquarters building in San Francisco.
There are six murals - one for the District
as a whole and five for the separate regional offices - portraying the
historical development of each District office and highlighting persons,
events, drawings of the Bank building, other landmarks and economic resources
important to that area. The original illustrations were drawn in pencil
then were enlarged to 3 feet by 6 feet by a photographic process which
added the sepia tone.
Walter Thomason, the artist, is a San
Francisco architect and illustrator. He was trained as an architect and
received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of California
at Berkeley and a Masters of Architecture from Harvard University. He
practiced architecture in California from 1968 to 1975 then switched to
full-time illustration in 1975. His work now primarily consists of producing
architectural renderings.
